ORPHAN CARE FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER - JUNE - JULY 2010

Dear partners, supporters and friends

Thank you once again!

Our ministry to children is made possible by your dedication, participation and support. Your partnership and contributions' no matter how small in your eyes, enable us to continually impact and support more children toward a better life and future.

Below you find a summary of all the events and work done in the past months.

  • Social worker's 'needs assessment': After many hours, days and months of hard work, numerous meetings and discussions with role players, we are near completion of our 3 month needs assessment. This study will enable us to approach the community correctly, engage children and their needs more effectively, as well as establish a good relationship with other organizations working in this community.

  • I can confidently say that we started this journey, almost two years ago, with no idea of the correct approach or enormity of the task. Driven by only compassion and the need to help children for a better future, we plunged ahead.

In our search for knowledge on how to approach issues, we soon realized:

    • There are ways to help and ways that are not helpful at all
    • That a community is a fragile environment completely different from the business environment where we usually operate
    • We first had to earn trust and respect before we could do anything else. God's favor and blessing helped us to accomplish this in the past two years.
    • We can now build on this foundation, supported by an in depth evaluation done by a professional team. We will be able to spend our energy and resources in areas where it will have most impact with a sustainable long-term vision, in line with our mission and objectives.
  • A German visitor became a voice for our children and foundation in Germany and raised funds for our kids club.
  • Graham Malan warmed the spirits of Linawo house in Kayelitsha with a new stove.
  • 15 Children from Linawo house moved from Khayelitsha to a beautiful house in Pinelands. At the house-warming we were able to put smiles on the children’s faces by giving each a pair of sport shoes.
  • Kids club closed over the long June July holiday during the soccer world cup and re-opened on a high note after the holiday.
  • The life skills camp in partnership with Badisa for 38 vulnerable children and orphans (aged 10 to 16) were a huge success thanks to your support: a weekend they will remember for a long time to come.
  • Reddam House private school sponsors Friday kids club with fruit juice and cookies.
  • A Grandma knitted 27 beautiful winter jerseys for babies 0-2 years, blessing the HIV+ and abandoned babies of Little Angels.
  • Jaqui Bibombe volunteers one day a week to help us with fundraising and admin. Awesome provision from God! Now we can also translate our communication into German and French.

Please contact us if you can assist in any of the below areas of need.

  • Friday Kids Club:
    • Hospitality - preparation and planning of meals
    • Production - set-up for music and sound.
    • Praise & worship - selection of songs and leading of 15 - 20 min singing and fun.
    • Hosts & volunteers - arranging of volunteers, checking in of kids, control of kids during the Friday kids club.
  • TV & Media - newsletter, marketing and web support.
  • Pastoral Care - orphaned & vulnerable kids.
  • Outings - Sunday bus once a month and arranging of outings.
  • Administration - PA, bookkeeping.
  • Sponsorship

Letter from one of the children:

My name is Bafana Nkatazo.

I used to struggle to get something but now I am not. I went to school with no money in my pocket or a snack to chew, I went to a school where your child can never go! I had to pay R50 for my school fee but I could'nt afford it, why cause I was swimming in the middle of poorness.

I lost my mother when I was 11 years old, I don't wanna talk of my father cause I never saw him, neither to see in photos or pictures. When I lost my mother, from then I lost my potential, but for a second I thought that I got my three sisters and three brothers so nothing to worry about. But I never saw any changes; all I did was to swim in poverty and poorness.

If it was'nt for Martin, the man who took me from hell and took me somewhere with tenderness. Even now I would have been swimming in the crazy none potential swimming pool.

Now I feel like a person again, but im not rushing things im taking them slowly. And when I succeed you will see the changes. I will never let my children suffer the same I did in life!

Bafana Nkatazo
